There are loads of crazy, fun and weird running races held all around the world. Don’t think you’re alone in your desire to have some fun while you run instead of doing something a bit more traditional. According to Running USA, the number of finishers of non-traditional races between 2009 and 2014 increased 40x!
Here are a few interesting events you may want to consider:
Who doesn’t love some good New York pizza while they run? Participants in this 2-mile event run through Tompkins Square Park and stop at checkpoints to eat three slices of pizza along the way. This year’s event will take place on September 17, 2016. If cupcakes are more your thing, then maybe you’d rather enter the NYC Cupcake Run taking place on October 15, 2016.
If togetherness with your partner is what you crave, then this race is for you! The event takes place at the Sunday River ski resort in Maine. It’s a 278-yard course filled with obstacles like log hurdles, sand traps and water hazards. During the race, each man carries a woman throughout the entire course. The winner of the race gets the woman’s weight in beer, five times her weight in cash and an entry into the world championship in Finland. Sound like fun? The event takes place October 8, 2016.
People run marathons in Minnesota in January? You bet they do! This is the oldest indoor marathon in America and will next take place on January 8, 2017. Participants run a marathon on an indoor track at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. 150 laps. And every 30 minutes, all runners have to change direction.
Run in your underwear in February? Depending on where you are, that can be quite invigorating! This one-mile run takes place over Valentine’s weekend in 38 cities across the U.S. and Australia. It originally started as a fundraiser for the Children’s Tumor Foundation and has raised millions for the organization (last year alone the event raised $3.5 million). There’s a wicked pre-game and after-party. And did we mention that everyone’s in their undies? You don’t want to miss this one!
Dream of running with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain but just can’t get the nerve up to do it? Then head to New Orleans for a “similar” experience, minus the gore. This one-mile race has thousands of participants dressed in white with red details running through the streets of New Orleans as they try to evade hundreds of Big Easy Roller girls dressed up as bulls wielding plastic bats. The Encierro (bull run) takes place during the annual San Fermin in Nueva Orleans festival, which will next occur on July 7-9, 2017. There’s lots of Bloody Mary stands along the way and no one wins or loses in this super-fun NOLA-style celebration!
